Psalm 49

Psalm 49:1-20

49
Chapter 49
To the director. A psalm. For the sons of Korah. 1 Hear this, all peoples; give ear, all inhabitants of the world. 2 Also the sons of Adam, also the sons of man, together the rich and the poor. 3 My mouth will speak wisdom, and the musing of my heart understanding. 4 I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will open it with the harp, a riddle. 5 Why should I fear in days of evil? The iniquity of my heels surrounds me. 6 Those who trust in their wealth and in the abundance of their riches boast. 7 No brother redeems—he redeems not; a man does not give to God his ransom. 8 And the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceases forever. 9 And the redemption of their soul is precious, and he ceases forever—he does not see the pit. 10 For wise men die; the fool and the brutish perish together, and they leave their wealth to others. 11 Their inward part is in their tombs forever; their dwelling is for generation and generation. They call their names upon the lands. 12 Man in honor does not remain; he is ruled like the beasts that are silenced. 13 This is their way, the way of fools to them, and after them with their mouth they approve. Selah. 14 Like sheep to Sheol they are appointed; death will shepherd them, and the upright will rule over them in the morning, and their form will waste away. Sheol is the dwelling for him. 15 But God will redeem my soul from the hand of Sheol, for he will take me. Selah. 16 Do not fear when a man becomes rich, when the honor of his house increases. 17 For when he dies, he will take nothing; his glory will not go down after him. 18 For though in his lifetime he blesses you and praises you when you do well for him. 19 He will come to the generation of his fathers; he will not see light forever. 20 A human is in honor, but he does not understand; he is compared to beasts that are silenced.
